        石英岩砂石（Quartz gravel）外形如鹅蛋，故俗称“鹅卵石”，通常呈白色、灰色，亦有黑色者。色白者由石英岩、石英砂岩或脉石英经风化、破碎、磨圆而形成。色黑者多有燧石组成（燧石是一种硅质化学沉积岩，常呈层状、结核状产于石灰岩中）。质地坚硬，硬度为7。陶瓷与耐火材料工业中常用于球磨机的磨球。质地纯净的亦可作为陶瓷坯、釉的原料。鹅卵石产于多山的海滨及山区河滩中，如大连、青岛海滩；在第四纪沉积层中也有广泛分布，如南京附近的雨花台砂石层。
